An Alternative Burns Night 2024

Sunday 28 January

at Mono

The 2024 event moved to a new venue – to the iconic stage of Mono - Café Bar.

This year’s fundraising donations raised an amazing amount of over £1,100 for – Indepen-dance – an inclusive dance company for disabled and non-disabled.

I had began working at Indepen-dance in the summer of 2023 and wanted to fundraise for the charity after seeing first-hand the benefits to its members and community their work brings.

This year’s event was made possible thanks to the support of the charity and with funding from Glasgow Credit Union.

Indepen-dance joined the line up hosting an inclusive ceilidh led by Holly Hunter and Wils McAslan – the first Ceilidh to be part of any of the Alt Burns Night – and one that had the whole crowd dancing.

Exhibition : With the move to a new venue meant the opportunity to showcase an exhibition – curated by Jack McElroy displayed photography works by this year’s event photographer, Siobhan Chalmers and Dylan Lombard – also a member of Indepen-dance.

The Exhibition explored the contrasts and similarities between the two photographer’s Glasgow street photography. Dylan, whose photographs capture the city during lockdown often with solo figures and Siobhan, whose photographs capture the rise of cities protests and demonstrations post lockdown.

With thanks to The Craft Pottery who raised and donated over £80, collaborating with Shan Daly to deliver a workshop – Land and Lore – inspired by occurring motifs in the artists practice to create a group painted ceramic tile mural of Burns to be displayed on the night.

Displayed within the space, installations by Shan Daly – One of the lassies – football scarves with embroidered textile work and Council Baby – Inhale/ Exhale – two glass panels sided by side inspired by lyrics of The Prodigy.

With thanks to The Craft Pottery and Mono Café Bar for donations for our raffle prizes.
